At the beginning of the play, Romeo is so heartbroken over Rosaline that he can barely function. Ay, the heads of the maids, or their maidenheads; take it in what sense thou wilt.

In deep despair, Romeo and Juliet committed suicide. He remains hidden while Juliet laments over her predicament. Ironically, it almost does, yet Shakespeare manipulates this with death. Before they can speculate further, Romeo enters the scene.

Passion outweighs reason at every turn. Unaware that Juliet has married Romeo in secret, old Capulet tells his wife to inform Juliet that she must marry Paris three days hence. He is thrilled to see that Juliet has returned to her obedient ways and he forgives her immediately. The heavy assonance of the "o" vowel in "O" and "woeful" creates a negative tone, mimicking the deep pain and anguish she feels.

The repetition of the words "my" and "only" emphasises Juliet's position - she has put herself in this circumstance and, despite the problems it may cause, she is willing to go through with whatever issues may arise due to it. However, more to the point, Capulet talks quite fondly of Romeo, despite his being a montague, which creates a sense of foreboding for the uniting of the two warring families at the end of the play, yet at the price of the two lovers.

Romeo happily takes his sin back by kissing her again. She asks Benvolio if he has seen Romeo, and Benvolio says that he has seen his depressed cousin wandering among the sycamores outside the city. Both parents seem to be open for the idea that Juliet should marry Paris, and for Paris to exercise all control over her, as this was how society was back then.

The Nurse clarifies the situation and says that Romeo killed Tybalt and is now banished. Romeo is infatuated with Rosaline, who does not return his feelings, and Juliet is betrothed to Paris by her father, but shows no true feelings towards him.
